Michael Connelly’s The Law of Innocence is a superb court procedural. In this mystery, Lincoln lawyer Mickey Haller is accused of murder. The murder occurred in his garage and the body was found in his trunk. It will take all of Haller’s talents, tricks, and associates if he is to get off. Making things harder for himself, Michael Connelly’s second best known character not only wants to be found not guilty but proven innocence. Covid 19 makes an appearance as background setting.

Law of Innocence is an easy read. The pacing is solid. The reader gets a few breaks from the compulsive need to find out what happens next when Connelly states his Haller is going to call it a night or is moved back to jail.

Long time readers of the Lincoln Lawyer will enjoy the reappearance of Maggie McFierce as a major character

Mickey Haller also has a pretty worthy adversary in prosecutor Dana Berg. I would have liked it if she had not been depicted as willing to push the rules of discovery as she seems to have been. It would have made for a cleaner, more interesting fight.

All of Haller’s associates are there including Harry Bosch. Unfortunately for Bosch fans, his appearances read a bit like an afterthought than necessary. I am sure Haller has his own ins with local cops and so on.

This being a Michael Connelly novel, it almost automatically gets a 10 out of 10. On the Connelly scale it gets an 8 out of 10. The ending is a bit rushed and slightly too neat for my taste. If you want to figure out my Connelly scale, Void Moon is at the top of the list.

The Law of Innocence by Michael Connelly is a book you buy for your friends. If you lend it, they will not want to return it.
