Mango Star is the 10th Mango Bob mystery by Bill H. Myers. It is certainly not his best effort. The premise is interesting enough: a Hollywood star named Nicky is on the lam from her husband and from his Scientology like cult and she hooks up with Walker who takes her under his wing.
The problem is N-O-T-H-I-N-G H-A-P-P-E-N-S for at least half of the book. Nicky switches places with her look alike cousin and stunt double Zoey shows up in and Nicky goes in Walker’s RV with his girlfriend Erin while Walker and Zoey hide in various RV parks in Nicky’s brand new RV. Everybody is waiting for the big day when Nicky gets to divorce her husband, Colton. Oh, there are a couple of FBI agents mildly interested in Nicky because she spoke to a former FBI agent in preparation for her latest role and might know something she is not supposed to know.
Then Zoey and Walker travel from RV park to RV park and keep in touch with Erin and Nicky though you never really know what Erin and Nicky are up to because Bill H. Myers does not let them reveal anything interesting aside from their being well.
I usually enjoy the Mango Bob mystery series by Bill H. Myers. It is a fun, lightweight, humorous mystery series that makes for a pleasant and stressless read. Mango Star, however, gets on your nerves very quickly because Myers spends most of this mystery novel spinning his wheels and having his main character and his sidekick go around in circles until the big day.
Things kind of get interesting in the last couple of chapters of Mango Star but by then it is way too late and you are reading because you never leave a book unfinished instead of reading because you care.
By the way the story comes to a resolution but the mystery keeps going on for a few more chapters for no particular reason.
Mango Star is a big pass. Even if you find it in the bargain bin.
