Sheba, Baby is one of three Pam Grier blacksploitation movies in the Vibe Fox In A Box 4 DVD set. The set also includes Coffy and Foxy Brown as well as a bonus disc with Vibe Magazine Presents: Pam Grier: Super Foxy Featurette and Blaxploitation to Hip-Hop Featurette. In Sheba, Baby Pam Grier plays a Philadelphia private eye who goes back to Louisville, Kentucky and becomes the Louisville slugger so she can defend her father and his loan business from the Black mob bad guys.Pam Grier is not as solid in Sheba, Baby as she was in the very good Coffy –then again the writing in this movie is barely B movie level– but this is still a decent action movie in the blacksploitation genre (lots of black actors in a B movie, violence, and loads of T&A basically). Sheba, Baby takes its time to set up a relationship between Sheba (Pam Grier) and Brick, her father’s associate and her ex of sorts, while also setting up a confrontation between Grier and the baddies. There is also the usual message in a bottle common to all blacksploitation movies about how Black on Black crime is hurting the community.
One of the funniest characters in the history of blaxploitation movies is Walker, the 10% a week loan shark dude in the black and white hound’s tooth outfit. He is in the funniest scene in Sheba, Baby when Pam Grier threatens him with being car washed if he doesn’t reveal the name of Mr. Big. If you thought today’s rap artists dressed to the screaming nines, you will realize they cannot hold a candle to Walker when it comes to loud style.
Action movie wise, Sheba, Baby kicks it up halfway through with a cool scene at the State Fair when the bad guys are running after Pam Grier (or is it the other way around?). This is followed by a reprise of the famous scene in Coffy where the bad guy is dragged by his mob boss but this time it is on a lake. A few more chase scenes and gunplay later and all’s well that ends well.
Sheba, Baby is the third action DVD in the Vibe Fox In A Box set and is a good blacksploitation B movie. Not a classic but definitely a fun watch.
