The Burglar Who Counted The Spoons is the eleventh Lawrence Block mystery novel featuring burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr. Granted, the series is formulaic. For example, the mysteries often end with all the suspect gathered in one place with Bernie explaining the whodunit and / or Rhodenbarr turning the tables on one of his clients. This said, Lawrence Block’s Burglar series makes for a fun read. The Burglar Who Counted the Spoons is no exception.
Here, Bernie Rhodenbarr is hired by a button obsessed collector to steal the Benjamin Button manuscript from a museum. Once this goes off well, he is hired to steal a specific rare spoon, hence the title.
A secondary plot involves Lawrence Block’s burglar helping old pal and nemesis Detective Ray Kirshmann solve the mystery of a woman found dead in an apartment that looks like it has been burgled but has not.
Lawrence Block is a talented story teller and Bernie Rhodenbarr is an enjoyable narrator. The Burglar who Counted the Spoons is a solid entry in Block’s Burglar series and is very much recommended light reading.
Lawrence Block is also the writer of the hard boiled Matthew Scudder mystery novels
