Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost
Aria Wallace, Robin Brule, Demetrius Joyette
Directed by Eleanor Lindo
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 2008
93 minutes

Nickleodeon’s Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost is a good family DVD if you’ve got tweens, especially a tween girl. This Roxy Hunter DVD is a smart, non-violent kids’ mystery and something a parent can watch without being bored to tears thanks to a few in-jokes (like Roxy enjoying NPR or “Not even the dead like lawyers, Max.”).

The movie opens in 1944 when a soldier comes to a home to ask a young woman in matrimony. Cut to an external shot of the house, some noise, and an off screen scream.

Many years later Roxy Hunter, her Mom, and Max move to Serenity Falls. Though not enthralled with the idea of moving, the house itself and the prospect of a ghost haunting the house are more than what a young sleuth could possibly dream of.

The story in this family DVD moves quite rapidly. Within a few minutes everything in Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost is clearly set up. There is even a secondary story involving Roxy’s mother and the assistant manager at the bank she now works at to keep adults interested.

Some parents might object to a few things here such as spiritualism, keeping secrets from your parent, not respecting the punishment your mother gave you, twice, and stealing. One of the kids even gets kidnapped for a while. There is a running gag subtle Poo joke some parents might find questionable.

Roxy Hunter is also a bit bratty at times. Personally though I only object to the Indian medical student who is a bit too stereotypical in an Apu / Simpsons kind of way.

The solve to Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost might take a bit of explaining to even the brightest kid as the ghost in this story is a ghost corporation and the mystery is about a shady land deal.
