Independent and personable former police deputy Dixie Hemmingway has a complicated life, past and present. She enjoys mixing family and friends with sweet and loving relationships with the mostly feline and canine companions she cares for as a professional pet sitter.
Happily, she becomes fast friends with down to earth and beautiful Laura Halston, a new neighbor of one of her charges. Unfortunately, the budding friendship abruptly ends when Laura is found murdered.
Fueled by guilt that she might have been able to prevent the tragedy, her police instincts immediately kick in and Dixie is compelled to investigate.
Initially the identity of the perpetrator seems obvious, but Dixie recalls her conversations with Laura. As other facts are unearthed, the plot thickens, and it appears that more than one person may have had reasons to do Laura in.
Fraught with lies, jealousy and betrayal, presented within a very charming and comfortable reading environment, Cat Sitter on a Hot Tin Roof by Blaize Clement is well written and interesting from start to finish. Characters maintain honesty and believability with well defined back stories, and real human flaws.
Besides being an intelligently written good mystery, Cat Sitter on a Hot Tin Roof is sometimes deep and philosophical. Likewise, Clement injects subtle gems of observational humour, as well as interesting and compelling tales of nature. Most entertaining are descriptions of cats’ personalities and thought processes compared to those of people, as well as gender differences of the human variety. That and a good, solid story makes Cat Sitter on a Hot Tin Roof by Blaize Clement an entertaining read for animal and mystery lovers alike.
