Fans of the comic mystery by authors like Kinky Friedman, Tim Dorsey and his Serge Storm series, or of the king of Florida weird Carl Hiaasen will absolutely love You Only Live Once. It is the first James Flynn mystery by Haris Orkin.
If You Only Live Once sounds like the title of a James Bond novel it is no accident. Harris Orkin takes Ian Fleming’s character and makes him a comic hero. Orkin is not particularly subtle as to his goal as James Flynn’s sidekicks in this first of six comic mysteries. His sidekicks are called Sancho, a male nurse at the funny farm where Flynn is being kept, and Dulcinea, a biker chick who is way in over her head. CLICK HERE TO BUY AT AMAZON
Mental Patient James Flynn thinks he is part of the British Secret Service. The secretary to the hospital doctor is named Miss Honeywell. The doctor is named Nickelson aka N. One of the patients is Q.
Flynn escapes the mental institution. Sancho and Dulcie aka Dulcinea somehow find themselves along for the ride. To make a long and very funny story short Flynn ends up robbing a drug pusher, gets chased by his boss Mendoza, and then gets chased by the boss’s boss, Goolardo
Goolardo has a property on a remote island where he has invited all the wealthiest men in the world with the intent to blackmail them so as to control the money market. Flynn, who somehow became his prisoner, is convinced Goolardo’s secret weapon is a mind control substance. It is not but it is as effective to get the billionaires to collaborate.
Lots of stuff gets blown up, usually by Flynn and usually accidentally. Flynn turns out to have all the skills of a 00 agent so it is possible he may win in the end.
You Only Live Once by Haris Orkin is one hell of a fun read. James Bond, and yes Matt Helm fans will especially appreciate how perfect this comic mystery is.
