Heat is an absolutely great cop and robbers thriller, drama, and action movie starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and a whole bunch of now A-list stars. Now in a Steelbook case, just a marketing gimmick, the Blu-ray version of Heat allows Michael Mann s obsessively polished sets and photography to be at their best. The 2009 Blu-ray had its share of criticism regarding sound levels and picture quality. Aside from mild color and light variation in the restaurant scene between De Niro and Pacino, I found none of this criticism applies here.
Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Pacino) is a very smart and obsessively dedicated cop. Neil McCauley (De Niro) is a very smart and meticulous big score man with a dedicated and very capable crew. Hanna and McCauley become aware of each other after a security truck heist goes wrong because of a last minute addition to McCauley s crew.
Known for its lengthy shootout scene halfway through, Heat is more, much more than a cop versus genius criminal action flick. The 170 minutes of this movie pretty much fly by because Mann also focuses on the human drama of this story, the cop and robber both get their full story presented, and the many secondary stories are all well-told and serve the greater purpose of the movie and are not just filler.
All the minor players are played by solid actors who would go on to much bigger roles including Machete s Danny Trejo and Academy Award winner Natalie Portman.
