Goodfellas looks great on Blu-ray. This Martin Scorsese classic in one of the all-time great gangster social dramas. Goodfellas is a look at organized crime through the eyes of one of the people in it. It is at times violent but it is also quite funny at times. The 20th Anniversary Edition Goodfellas Blu-ray comes with a 34-page digibook, lots of special features, and a bonus DVD Public Enemies, the Golden Age of the Gangster Film that was also included in the Warner Brothers Gangster Collection Volume 4. The bonus DVD and digibook format are the only differences between this and the first Goodfellas Blu-ray release.

Ray Liotta (Henry), Robert De Niro (Jimmy), and Joe Pesci (Tommy) are three hoods who hook up with mob boss Paulie. They are not Italians so they do not have the inside track but they are very successful, understand the rules, and are respected. Goodfellas follows Henry from his first days as a gopher for Paulie to his rise and fall in the mob.

Based on a true story, Goodfellas is a great inside look at the life of the criminally priviledged. Scorsese makes all these people look almost normal because they believe they are normal. The only exception is Tommy (a superb performance by Pesci) whose temper gets him in trouble a few too many times.

Eventually, everything starts to collapse around Henry and he has to make a few decisions about his future and that of his family.

Goodfellas is more a social drama than a shoot-em-up gangster movie. It also has a very enjoyable dark sense of humor and a few gory scenes.

In addition to the Public Enemies documentary DVD, special features on Goodfellas include commentary track with Scorsese with Liotta and Lorraine Bracco, commentary with the real Henry Hill and ex-FBI agent Edward McDonald; a making of; The Goodfellas Legacy; The Workaday Gangster, stories about growing up in the kind of neighborhood portrayed in the movie. Public Enemies also includes four mob-themed WB cartoons including Bugs and Thugs and Racketeer Rabbit.
