Three Days of the Condor
Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow
Directed by Sydney Pollack
Based on 6 Days of the Condor by James Grady
Universal 1975
117 minutes

Director Sydney Pollack's Three Days of the Condor is one of the best mystery / spy thrillers ever made. This Vietnam Watergate era movie features an absolutely solid cast and one hell of a good story. Aside from Redford, Dunaway, von Sydow, this thriller features John Houseman and Cliff Robertson. It is a wonder Paramount has not released a 3 Days of the Condor DVD with director's commentary or anything showing the respect this movie deserves. This is one of the very best conspiracy theory DVDs out there.

One of many Sydney Pollack Robert Redford collaborations 3 Days of the Condor is the story of Joe Turner, a book lover whose job is to read books for the CIA and feed the plots into a computer. One day he comes back from a lunch run and finds his whole section has been eliminated. He calls in to his controller and follows his instructions until he realizes somebody inside "the company" is out to get him too. Turner realizes he is the mouse in a cat and mouse game and can trust no one. Fortunately, he is a smart guy and has read enough mystery novels and spy thrillers to have a few ideas as to what to do when you are out in the cold (the movie takes place a few days before Christmas). He is also helped out by a New York photographer (Faye Dunaway) who develops a lightning quick case of the Stockholm Syndrome.

Conspiracy theory buffs will very much enjoy Three Days of the Condor. After all, it is hard to imagine some people inside the U.S. government have a secret organization and an agenda of their own, isn't it?  Sidney Pollack has created a simply superb thriller with this movie. There are many excellent scenes but a personal favorite involves Redford and von Sydow in an elevator.

Three Days of the Condor DVD is an excellent thriller that deserves a better rerelease with director commentary and so on. Meanwhile, this version will do.
