Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray DVD Combo
Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams
Directed by Guy Ritchie
Warner Home Entertainment 2010
128 minutes

Sherlock Holmes is a superb mystery starring Robert Downey jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. I am not a big Guy Ritchie fan but must admit his take on Sherlock Holmes makes for a very intelligent and entertaining movie that balances mystery, romance, action and adventure, comedy, and drama perfectly. The Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray DVD and digital copy combo pack is the only way to go for this great movie.

Sherlock Holmes assumes the viewer knows about the character so spares the viewer biographical background. The story starts with Homes and Watson working on a case and rescuing a damsel in distress. This is connected to the central events in the movie. Secondary story lines include Watson’s pending engagement and Holmes’ feelings about it,  a mysterious woman from Holmes’ past named Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), and a practitioner of the dark arts.

Central to the success of this mystery Blu-ray is the relationship between Homes and Watson. Jude Law keeps up with Downer jr. while playing a much less flamboyant character.

There is a lot going on in Sherlock Holmes. After a while the mystery at the center of this adventure loses some interest but by then you are more than willing to see how Holmes will solve it.

Everything works in this movie. The one weak moment is at the end of the movie on top of Tower Bridge where the use of green screen is more than glaring because it was so well done throughout the movie.

Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray special features include Maximum Movie Mode where Guy Ritchie occasionally interrupts the film for commentary in addition to picture in picture, storyboard comparisons, stills galleries, focus points, and a timeline. This is really fun. Especially interesting is the feature on recreating 19th century London.

The DVD in the combo pack features only the movie and a digital copy
