Married Life
Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson
Pierce Brosnan, Rachel McAdams
Directed by Ira Sachs
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 2008
90 minutes

If you like the early Hitchcock movies you will probably like Married Life. This is one of those old-fashioned movies you have to be patient with to really enjoy. It is no coincidence Married Life is a character driven almost film noir set in 1949.  For some strange reason the DVD jacket quotes a critic labeling this movie a comedy but it is certainly not that.

Chris Cooper plays Harry, a married businessman in his fifties who has fallen in love with Kay (Rachel McAdams), a beautiful woman in her thirties. Harry confides this to his best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan) who quickly develops an interest in Kay. Harry does not want his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) to suffer from the breakup so he decides to kill her instead.

It is, of course, more complicated than that as Richard quickly finds out. He himself further complicates things.

Married Life has some very interesting twists that will certainly surprise the viewer.

There are few movies that have their own personality. This one does.
