In 1996 The Pretender, Jarred, came into our homes and into the hearts of many viewers. A well conceived, written, acted and directed show the premise was the driving force behind a show which mixed elements of The Fugitive with the idea of someone who can take on any job no matter how difficult. Jarred sees himself as an avenging angel for the downtrodden and ill-treated.

The Pretender has one story arc per episode where Jarred takes on a position close to a family or person that has been victimized and helps them gain some measure of retribution. At the same time there is the series story arc that involves The Center. The Center is a shadowy organization, which probably has military connections and uses the people in their care to predict problems, project solutions and resolutions to things which may or may not exist. Jarred was their most brilliant performer before he escaped and started to find out some of the things that his research has been used for. The Center wants to get Jarred back alive and sends their very best hunter – the leggy and dominatrix like Catherine Parker – to hunt Jarred down and bring him back.

Each episode is a well crafted combination of the Center almost catching Jarred because he leaves them clues as to his where abouts and Jarred solving problems for other people while searching for his parents. The Pretender was a very strong series that was consistently tightly written and executed. During it’s four year stint The Pretender delivered everything the audience could want including resolutions to questions asked at the beginning of the series. This is a must have collection for The Pretender fans and would be a great addition to the DVD library of fans of series like The Fugitive and The Equalizer.
