Fringe ? The Complete First Season
John Noble, Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson
20 Episodes 4 Blu-ray Discs
Originally aired FOX 2008-09
Warner Home Video 2009
Fringe is way cool. You have to give this paranormal mystery show a couple of episodes to get its footings but even at the beginning this show is on the addictive side. Many have compared Fringe to X-Files but I can’t really say if that is accurate. Fringe The Complete First Season features 20 episodes on 4 Blu-ray discs and this is one of few shows that does look better on Blu-ray instead of DVD.
Mad scientist Walter Bishop (a great performance by John Noble) is released from the insane asylum by his estranged son Peter (Joshua Jackson) at the request of FBI Special Agent Dunham (an uneven performance by Anna Torv who often looks like she smells a fart). Stuff happens and all three and a junior agent end up working together investigating mysterious, gory, bizarre, and fringe science gone wrong events. These events are sometimes connected to work Bishop did for the U.S. government during the Viet Nam war. Other events are part of a series that form The Pattern or could be tied to a company called Massive Dynamics.
Fringe science events in this paranormal mystery series include a bus full of people encased in some kind of plastic, a take on Dorian Gray, an airplane that lands with everybody dead on board, killer butterflies, artificially created lifeforms, a vampire of sorts, spontaneous combustion, and lots of other freaky creepy things like a Mr. Electro. There is also a bald guy that starts showing up a lot and the ghost of an agent.
The Complete First Season of Fringe is great if you like paranormal crime shows. It is not for those who easily get queasy as some scenes are on the rather gory side, especially in high definition Blu-ray. The filming and special effects really benefit from being seen on Blu-ray instead of standard definition DVD.
