Bones is a case of the TV adaptation being much better than the original novel. This show is sort of based on the Temperance Brennan mystery novel series by forensic pathologist Kathy Reichs (which itself owes a bit to Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta series). Season 4 of Bones features 25 episodes on 6 DVD or 5 Blu-ray discs. There are no differences between the Season Four Bones DVD and Blu-ray when it comes to special features.
I must admit I have not followed Bones on TV and this not because the show isn’t any good, it is, but there is just so much out there. Now that I know this show is sort of The Big Bang Theory meets CSI I’ll make a point to watch it. This review is based on a screener of Season 4 of this mystery TV show featuring the last two episodes of the 2008-09 season.
Emily Deschanel plays forensic pathologist Temperance “Bones” Brennan who with sidekick FBI Special Agent Booth. Crime happens, Temperance Brennan and her assistants do the autopsy, and both she and Booth investigate. Brennan’s nerdness and social ineptitude and her Booth’s dynamics and the show’s tongue in cheek, or wherever the tongue ended up on the body, approach makes this show stand out.
Season Four of this series adds a series of trainee pathologists aka squints to the show and this allows the writers to introduce even quirkier characters and thus create whole new levels of dark comedy. I especially liked the penultimate episode’s use of Stewie from The Family Guy.
The final episode of Bones Season Four is one of those boring alternate universe episodes. Special features on the DVD and Blu-ray set are a pretty decent gag reel, deleted scenes, and a feature about the Squints.
