North By Northwest Blu-Ray 50th Anniversary Edition
Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Widescreen 1:85:1
Warner Home Entertainment 2009

North By Northwest is your basic Alfred Hitchcock mistaken identity thriller. It features the second most common Hitchcock cinematic reference, the crop duster chasing Cary Grant in the corn field. Made between Vertigo and Psycho, North By Northwest is a classic thriller that is still suspenseful fifty years later. North by Northwest Blu-ray is supposed to have special features but my Blu-ray copy did not even have a menu to access them. The book is nice but I doubt this is worth getting on Blu-ray, especially as Cary Grant’s tan keeps changing.

In North By Northwest mild-mannered business man Roger Thornhill is mistaken for George Kaplan. He is forced into a car, meets a rich man named Townsend, and then boozed up and sent down a hill in a car.. These are just the beginning of his problems. He will then be suspect in the death of a U.N. diplomat named Townsend who is not the Townsend Thornhill first met and chased across the country by the people who first kidnapped him.

Kaplan’s aka Thornhill’s adventures also include a gorgeous blonde (Eva Marie Saint) and a spymaster named the Professor. This is a very complex tale of many fake or mistaken identities. Alfred Hitchcock makes sure you do not get lost in the process and always keeps you interested and guessing.

One of the keys to this classic thriller is Cary Grant who has a talent for comedy that comes in handy here at times.

Special features that are supposed to be on North By Northwest Blu-ray are Commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman; New 2009 documentary: The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style; Feature-length career profile: Cary Grant: A Class Apart; North by Northwest: One for the Ages: explore the movie’s innovations and influences; Vintage 2000 documentary: Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North by Northwest; Music-only audio track; Stills gallery; Theatrical trailers and TV spots.

The audio features are there but I could not access any menu for the rest so could not access the features themselves.
