Insomnia is a moody, creepy, and very good thriller that looks great on Blu-ray. Al Pacino is veteran LAPD homicide detective Will Dormer. He and his partner (Martin Donovan) are sent to Nightmute, a remote Alaskan community where a young woman has been murdered. There they are partnered with Ellie Burr (Hillary Swank), an eager young detective who obviously admired Dormer. Nightmute is experiencing 24-hour daylight and Dormer cannot get any sleep. This starts to affect him psychologically
The cops set a trap for the killer. Things go badly and Dormer shoots his partner and kills him. This is suspicious as his partner was going to cooperate with an Internal Affairs investigation. It is also suspicious because Dormer covers up his crime. At the same time he tells Burr to make sure her report on the shooting is complete before she signs it.
Insomnia is a slow paced mystery that will please fans who prefer their thrillers to be about solving a crime and not about car chases and gun battles. If features original story developments and interesting characters. Robin Williams shows up halfway through in a nonconventional role.
