Deadline by Sandra Brown, is one of the best mystery novels I have read this year.
Deadline follows the very interesting story of the exhausted and dishevelled Dawson Scott, a journalist who has been covering tough gritty human interest stories in Afghanistan. He is asked by retired FBI man Gary Headly, to document the trial of Willard Strong, a man charged with the murder of his wife and her war veteran lover Jeremy Wesson, who happens to be the son of a pair of domestic terrorists that have eluded capture for the last 40 years. Dawson reluctantly agrees, but upon his arrival in Savannah, he is mesmerized by Amelia, Jeremy Wesson’s beautiful young widow and her two delightfully rambunctious sons. The attraction and mounting tension between Dawson and Amelia is acutely visceral and definitely ratchets up the excitement of the story.
Strange happenings occur at Amelia’s beach house, and after a misplaced murder, it appears that her life is in danger. Dawson is determined to protect her, but even he cannot predict the events that follow and what they will discover about their lives.
Containing an equally strong back story and interesting characters, Deadline is smooth, seamless and solid, but by no means simple. Suspense and surprise are expertly placed to keep the reader hooked and moving forward with great anticipation.
One twist produced an audible gasp from this reader. (It was great!)
Multidimensional, entertaining, and captivating, Deadline by Sandra Brown is a pleasure to read.
