Holes is a movie for children which is thoroughly enjoyable regardless of your age. A teen adventure from Walt Disney Home Entertainment featuring Shai Lebeouf Holes is a gentle coming of age story.

The premise of the story is simple enough: Stanley Yelnats IV comes from a family in which the all the men of the family have the same name and horrendous luck. Stanley’s father, Stanley Yelnats III, is preoccupied trying to invent a product that will deodorize shoes. Naturally enough when young Stanley gets hit in the head by a pair of flying shoes the shoes turn out to be stolen from an orphanage fund raiser. The police do not believe Stanley’s story and he gets sent off to a “youth reform center”.

At the reform center the reformation process consists of having all the detainees dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep every day under the blazing desert sun. The story weaves together the history of the location and the story of Kissing Kate Barlow the most notorious female bandit of her day, the history of Stanley’s family and the history of a boy named Zero who is also at the camp with Stanley.

The movie is rated PG 13 but what limited violence there is in the movie is cartoonish in nature as are the evil villains played to a T by Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight. Holes is a wonderful movie.
