Sheila Kindellan-Sheehan is a good writer and pens a believable story chock full of characters who are wonderfully detailed and voiced with a sureness that is not often seen in a genre that is more plot than character driven. Kindellan-Sheehan’s first novel The Sands Motel is an excellent freshman effort that bodes well for future projects.
The Sands Motel takes place in Miami but the focus of the story is on those who are visiting or inhabit Miami and are not long term residence. Carmen and Caitlin are in Miami for their annual respite from the freezing Montreal winters and enjoying themselves when trouble lands squarely in their lap. It is the kind of trouble which is as much of their own making as it is a force of circumstance and the ensuing chase and suspense will satisfy most fans of the mystery thriller genre.
One of the most interesting aspects of The Sands Motel is the third person omniscient voice that spends a good deal of time in the heads and examining the motivations of the bad guys. This exploration of the motivations of those on the wrong side of the law, the moral ambiguity that most of us experience when faced with tough decisions and very well detailed settings combine to deliver a read that is engrossing and satisfying. In short The Sands Motel is a darned good read and belongs on your bookshelf.
