The small community is close and composed of generations of residents that have lived there their entire lives. Few people, including the law, want him nosing around in their jurisdiction.
It appears that Jennifer was investigating a serious incident regarding a family member that occurred decades prior. Did she discover too much or did her high-security job put her in jeopardy?
An apparently contrived story of her untimely end is being told. Details simply don’t add up, so Devine must sort truth from fiction as he wins the trust of some of the locals. When more unexpected deaths and unusual incidents occur, he realizes that there is much more to the town than meets the eye. His own life threatened, he works intensely to unravel the murders and solve mysteries that have plagued the community for decades.
The Edge is a fast-paced, layered and exciting read. New information gradually revealed adds intrigue and danger and keeps the reader on their toes. Is there a coverup, or a conspiracy, or something even more sinister? Even with theories and suspicions, we are never quite sure where things are headed until everything blows out of the water.
The Edge is an intriguing and satisfying read, which although part of a series, easily stands alone. Score another one for Baldacci!
