Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray DVD Combo
Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams
Directed by Guy Ritchie
Warner Home Entertainment 2010
128 minutes

Sherlock Holmes has everything:  An interesting developing mystery, sinister, unscrupulous villains, the dark underworld of a secret society, heartbeats quickened by love and fear, and of course our beloved hero, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.), and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.  All is set within the mood of 19th century London.  Who could ask for anything more?

Also available in Blu-ray - DVD Combo.

Holmes and Watson room in a large stately mansion, where they share an intense, complex, and sometimes frustrating friendship, complicated by Holmes'  moods, and the fact that Watson and his lady, Mary Marsden (Kelly Reilly) are attempting to become engaged to each other, and disengaged from Holmes.

The pair is on the trail of a mysterious serial killer with strong connections to the black arts.  Warned that more deaths will occur, the eccentric yet brilliant Holmes uses his truly remarkable skills of observation and deduction to piece together crucial information that might literally save the world.  That and his talent for tools and gadgetry, make him fascinating to watch.

Holmes himself is thrown a curve, with the sudden reappearance of Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), a mysterious siren for whom his flame still burns.  Their chemistry is apparent, however, Adler has an agenda of her own.

The story is complex and interesting; the classic play between good and evil.  Occasionally the focus drifts, but the excitement and momentum are recaptured and maintained, especially with the inclusion of some great fights and chases that get the adrenaline going.

Scenes are often dirty and dark, but not depressing, as Director Guy Ritchie well-illustrates the life and hardships of 19th century London.

Robert Downey Jr. is an excellent choice for Holmes, giving an exciting and contemporary feel to a character elsewhere portrayed as stuffy and conservative.  Likewise, Law provides a solid supporting role.

This DVD version is very good; enjoyable from start to finish.  Viewing is recommended.
