Street Kings stars Keanu Reeves as Detective Tom Ludlow, a lone wolf troubled detective who is not against taking the law in his own hands. When it seems others have done the same thing and murdered his ex-partner, Ludlow cannot leave things alone even when his boss tells him to for his own good. He should have.
This who are the good cops and who are the bad cops? DVD is a somewhat messy movie with solid talent. Forest Whitaker plays Ludlow's Captain and Hugh Laurie is the IAD detective who tries to get Ludlow to either convert or open his eyes to what is really going on. Cedric the Entertainer has a small role as a go between
It is easy to see Street Kings suffered from studio / director turnaround. There are rather expository scenes and some clumsy dialogue that suck away the tension and remind you this is just a movie:
Ludlow: Look, Paul, This thing you want, that you think you want, you don't want.
Paul / Disco / Diskant: You don't know who I am or what I want.
There are also a few scenes that seem out of sequence such as the party where Ludlow introduces his girlfriend to his brothers and Captain Wander (Whitaker) points out how Ludlow is "like a laser once he acquires a target". The bits about Ludlow's dead wife are heavy handed, really make you wonder why they are there, and are never resolved
In the end Street Kings is a bit of a convoluted mess but this DVD makes for a good evening's entertainment if you are not too demanding and only rented it.
